Below is an excerpt from the bulletin:

“A Good Book is seeking your help in its efforts to stay in business. As the economy continues to beat down on us more and more many small businesses have no choice but to close their doors. Despite A Good Books wonderful first year in business our second year has brought stagnant sales leading to low cash reserves, along with a continuing weak retail economy.
Although we have made great strides to cut back on expenses and renegotiate our current lease, the bookstore continues to plummet in sales thus falling back on its monthly lease.
We are asking the community and our patrons to show your support in keeping this establishment open and thriving.

There has been many times when I have wanted to close the doors and go home but with hard work and perseverance, we intend to make it to our 3rd year which will be March 2009! Thank you to all of our continued customers and supporters.
We appreciate your business! --Julie Williamson”

(Harrisburg, PA, 06/01/2008) With realistic precision, debut author Julia Press Simmons has penned a modern day opus!
~ L.M. Ross, author of "Manhood," and "The Moanin' After"

Set in a small section of North Philadelphia, in the spring of 1996, Strawberry Mansion depicts three teenage girls', Tabitha, Lisa, and Shanice; struggle to rise above domestic violence, incest, and promiscuity, on their journey to become successful young women. Although this is a work of fiction, it is based on an all-to-sad reality. In a survey of over four thousand 9 through 12 graders, approximately 1 in 5 females reported physical and/or sexual abuse by a dating partner. Females between the ages of 16 and 24 experience the highest rates of domestic violence, and 40 percent of teenage girls know of someone who has been beaten by a boyfriend. Julia Press Simmons brings these issues and others to the forefront in her drama filled, fast paced, debut novel "Strawberry Mansion: A Philadelphia Story."

Dramatic is one of many words used to describe Strawberry Mansion: A Philadelphia Story, a story based on a strong, often dismissed notion: the sins of the parents can and often do embed themselves in the children, creating devastating effects. The story is centered around three young women, friends, who must rely on their connection to each other to weather tragic storms. Tabitha, 19, lost her freedom in high school when she hooked up with a boy who would impregnate her and make her his punching bag. Lisa, 17, is deemed "the strong one" by her friends, but her own past of sexual abuse and pregnancy at the hands of her step father keeps her one second from falling apart as the drama builds. Shanice, 14, is a hellion, ready and willing to let any boy have her just to get the affection she believes her mother has withheld. As their world spirals out of control, they cling fast to one another in the hope that love, friendship, and strength will not only keep them together, but will also move them to a better place in their lives.

Every quarter Queen Midas Books will sponsor a different domestic violence abuse shelter or program. This quarter a portion of the proceeds from every book sold will go to the YWCA of Greater Harrisburg Violence Intervention and Prevention Program.

Tavy Day

LoveXs2.JPG

PHILADELPHIA, PA(April 2007, 10.00) -

Poet, spoken-word artist, and mother, Tavy Day transformed her insight of parenting into a beautiful, funny and instructive children's book for both parents and children. Tavy Day's artistry consists of acting, and modeling, in addition to spoken word, mentoring as well as children's stories, that all emerge from the sharply contrasting worlds of her youth - from a nurturing childhood home into her young adulthood where she struggled to survive on the streets. Born from those disparate lives, Tavy realized the vision and commitment of her adult life as a parent, evolutionary figure and storyteller.

Love x's 2, tells the story of divorce and co-parenting from a young child's perspective, where the tough questions of parenting are answered simply with humor and wisdom. Whether separated, divorced or never married, co-parenting is an issue not often addressed. Even more neglected, addressing the effects this type of environment has on children, and as parents enforcing the "love" factor. In this book, through the voice of six-year-old India, we experience how it feels to go "back and fourth" between mom and dad. While learning the difference between her parent's roles in her life, India enjoys playing with her best friends and visiting her grandparents. Having amazing fun along the way, her greatest lesson of all is learning exactly how much she is loved!
